Ophthalmologist
Dr. Peter A. Shriver received his medical degree in 1985 from the University of New England and became board certified in Ophthalmology in 1994. He specialized in cornea and refractive surgery and has primarily dedicated his practice to refractive laser procedures. He is one of a select few eye surgeons who has received full fellowship training in surgery of the cornea, the external window of the eye, and refractive surgery, which corrects the eye’s ability to focus. During his fellowship at the University of California, California College of Medicine, Dr. Shriver was selected as the Beckman Laser Fellow at the world-renowned Beckman Laser Institute, recognized as one of the world’s premier centers of biomedical laser research.
Dr. Shriver took part in the original FDA trials for LASIK approval and has performed over 10,000 LASIK procedures. His LASIK treatments include many VIP’s – fellow eye doctors, surgeons, Hall of Fame athletes, Special Forces personnel, and news anchors. Dr. Shriver also performed LASIK surgery on members of his own family. Both Dr. Shriver and his wife have had LASIK. Since 1991, Dr. Shriver has been an invited national lecturer on the Excimer laser and laser vision correction. He routinely teaches and proctors other Ophthalmologists in basic and advanced techniques on refractive procedures and LASIK in Connecticut, New England, and the United States.

I have incredible vision thanks to Dr. Shriver's care over the years. Not a day goes by where I don't consciously appreciate how well I can see because of him. That's not to say I was born with perfect eyes. He performed laser treatment for my acute angle closure, did cataract surgery on both my eyes, and corrected my astigmatism. Dr. Shriver has been my eye doctor for many, many years. As my eyesight declined, his advice was always invaluable (like laser treatment for acute angle closure). Whenever I've had a concern about my eyes, I am always able to get to see Dr. Shriver right away. I had a retinal detachment last year and he walked me out to the front desk to make sure I was scheduled with a retina specialist immediately (with whom I had emergency surgery the next day). He recently performed cataract surgery on my eyes. My eyesight is now incredible thanks to Dr. Shriver. I do not need to wear glasses at all. My vision just tested at 20/20. As I write this, I realize my eyesight sounds like a complete train wreck, but I have never felt that way. I have the greatest eye doctor!! Dr.Shriver performed my PRK eye correction surgery. Knowing PRK was a longer healing process, I was hesitant and nervous. Dr.Shriver was extremely personable and his knowledge and expertise quickly put me at ease. He assured me that PRK was a safer option for me, and his concern for my well being meant a lot. He explained to me all of the risks and rewards of surgery and I was booked for a couple of weeks later. I underwent the PRK procedure rather than traditional LASIK as he informed me that I have thin corneas. He explained the difference between both procedures thoroughly, which allowed me to make an informed decision that was best for me. My laser eye surgery was the best money I ever spent! I had the surgery 9 years ago and my vision has been perfect ever since. Imagine seeing clearly while running, swimming, reading, and driving. I'll be 42 years old this year and I still do not need reading glasses, although that is something that will probably occur in the next five years. The surgery is painless and the biggest side effects are severely bloodshot eyes and dry eyes. The bloodshot goes away in a week or two and I needed eye drops for several months. But to not use dangerous contact lenses anymore, it was all worth it. Dr. Shriver is honest and kind and will walk you through the entire procedure and call you the next day. Dr. Shriver has been my Opthamologist for nearly two years. I have had no complaints with his staff overall, and he has been thorough and professional in his routine examinations. He also discovered a potentially serious issue, and put me on a more frequent visit/exam schedule to be sure it never becomes a real problem (treatable if diagnosed early and addressed properly). Dr. Shriver has also treated me for cataracts in both eyes. The results after surgery have been as good or better than I would have expected.
