A pterygium is a raised benign wedge shaped growth of the conjunctiva.
A pinguecula is a yellow-brown elevation of the conjunctiva.
Neither are painful, but at times you may feel some irritation, experience redness, or have some tearing. Typically both types form on people who spend a lot of time in the sunlight and work outdoors.
In some cases they may grow affecting the cornea. If this occurs and vision is affected, surgical treatment is available.
