| To
help you plan your schedule, please be aware that an initial complete
eye examination takes approximately one hour. Both eyes will be dilated
for patients having complete exams. Dilation causes sensitivity to
light and an inability to see things clearly at close range. For these
reasons, some patients prefer to have someone drive them home. Your
eyes will remain dilated for about 3 to 4 hours.
Your examination will begin when our ophthalmic technician performs
a history, checks your vision, eyeglasses and intraocular pressures.
Based on the specific reason for your exam, additional tests may
be performed.
The physician will then see you to evaluate initial test results
and examine the health of your eyes. The physician will discuss
with you your medical condition, and whether there is a need for
eyeglasses, a change in your current prescription, or other necessary
treatment plans.
To decrease the length of appointment time, we recommend that you
complete the New Patient Form and either fax it to our office prior
to your arrival (Fax #: (860) 347-2619) or bring it with you on
the day of your exam.
For
Contact Lens Wearers:
If you currently
wear contact lenses, it is important to wear the contacts to your
appointment and to bring with you the boxes, vials, or foil packets
in which your lenses were dispensed which indicate your lens parameters.
Changes in your contact lens parameters discovered during your exam
may require a contact lens re-fitting. Fittings are done in our
Optical Department by appointment.
For
Patients Considering Contact Lenses:
After your initial
eye examination, your physician will give you an eyeglass prescription
to fit your needs. Once you have your eyeglass prescription, you
can visit the Optical Department and make an appointment for a contact
lens fitting. Federal statutes require fittings to be performed
prior to dispensing contact lenses. Fittings are done in two or
three sittings with trial contacts dispensed to ensure a proper
fit.
For
Eyeglass Wearers:
Be sure to bring
your most up-to-date eyeglasses with you for proper evaluation.
