| AREDS For the convenience of our patients, we now offer Preservision eye vitamins, based on the AREDS study, which states that ARED vitamins will slow the progress of Advanced Macular Degeneration. See Macular Degeneration for complete details on the condition. What is the AREDS Study? The study performed by the National Eye Institute took over 3,500 participants at varied degrees of their macular degeneration to study the effects of specific vitamins. The high levels of specific vitamins found in the Bausch and Lomb Lutein or Bausch and Lomb AREDS are said to lower the threat of developing advanced macular degeneration by approximately 25%. Why are there two different types of vitamins? The development of the two types of eye vitamins was due to the AREDS study. Patients who do not smoke are offered AREDS formula and patients that do smoke receive the Lutein formula. Please inform your Middlesex Eye Physician of your smoking history. If you are diagnosed with macular degeneration, please see your ophthalmologists for follow-up care. Dilated exams and the use of your amsler grid will closely monitor your disease. Only your ophthalmologist will know if you are a good candidate for eye vitamins. Recommendation on the use of the type of eye vitamins can only be determined by your Middlesex Eye Physicians ophthalmologist. |
