Cataract Surgery

(Cataract)

Signs of a cataract that may be ready for removal:

·         Halo’s: Halos are a common complaint of patients presenting with a cataract.  You will note halo’s around lights.

·         Foggy Vision: Imagine your window looking outside with a haze.  Colors are not clear and vibrant.  Patients tend to notice this with objects they have know are white and now have a yellow tinge.

·         Decreased Vision:  Covering one eye and then the other; patients tend to see a difference between both eyes.  Eye glasses cannot correct mature cataracts.

Eye drops or other medications CANNOT remove a cataract.  Updating your glasses does not improve your vision completely.

Before Surgery:
After your eye examination with your ophthalmologist at Middlesex Eye Physicians, you will be sent to our surgical coordinator to make appointments:

* Your ultrasound (sometimes called Ascan) appointment
* Your surgical Date
* Your post operative visit (typically the day after surgery)
* You will be given a folder of information to review with loved ones

Prior to your surgery, you will need to have your eye(s) measured by our qualified ophthalmic ultrasound technician.  You will have an ultrasound of your eye(s), which measures from the front surface to the back of your eye.  These measurements are computed by your Middlesex Eye Physician ophthalmologist and an appropriate lens will be chosen for your eye.  During your ultrasound (Ascan) appointment, the technician will review a typical experience at the surgery center and answer any questions that you may have.  You will be given a prescription for eye drops ordered by your ophthalmologist to use before and after your cataract surgery.  Please bring a loved one and/or questions to this appointment.
